NEW RELEASES
The Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts is pleased to release two new CDs by Mike Kelley on Compound Annex; Plato’s Cave Rothko’s Chapel, Lincoln’s Profile/The Peristaltic Airwaves and Profondeurs Vertes. The mixes, text and artwork on the CDs were approved by Mike Kelley prior to his untimely death. He had been working on the releases for a number of years and in keeping with his wishes, the Foundation chose to produce them posthumously under the supervision of Scott Benzel, Mike’s frequent collaborator and music producer and Mary Clare Stevens, Mike’s studio manager and now Executive Director of the Foundation.

Profondeurs Vertes

Mike Kelley Profondeurs-Vertes (CD) Music composed by Mike Kelley and Scott Benzel.

Profondeurs Vertes is the title of a three-channel video installation produced by Mike Kelley for the Louvre, Paris, in 2006. The music on this CD functions as the soundtrack music for the three videos. Profondeur Vertes begins with a Traditional Sea Chanty complete with waves, creaking timbers, and seagulls, moving into an airy Romantic-era piano and harp piece based on Charles Tomlinson Griffes’ Veil of Dreams which then transitions into an orchestral rendition of the Shark Attack from John Singleton Copley’s painting “Watson and the Shark”; more Chanty’s follow and a rendition of Lautréamont’s Maldoror recited in French complete the cycle of Kelley’s thought.

Platos CaveMike Kelley Platos’s Cave, Rothko’s Chapel, Lincoln’s Profile (with Sonic Youth) and The Peristaltic Airwaves (2CD with booklet and text by Mike Kelley)

This two CD set includes remastered recordings of Kelley’s 55 minute performance poem, Plato’s Cave, Rothko’s Chapel, Lincoln’s Profile at Artists Space, New York on Dec. 5th, 1985 and The Peristaltic Airwaves, a live performance that aired on KPFK Radio, Los Angeles on September 30th, 1986. The only existing audio documentation of Mike Kelley’s groundbreaking performance work. Plato’s Cave Rothko’s Chapel, Lincoln’s Profile in Kelley’s words was the “longest and most elaborate” of the texts he’d written for solo performance. With Molly Cleator, incidental music by Sonic Youth and Adam Rudolph, this CD showcases Kelley’s humorous and profane text from the performance, a didgeridoo, and scorching noise from the band. The Peristaltic Airwaves- a live radio broadcast- draws on similar material and employs sound effects, a house band, call-ins, and other live radio staples to create a unique and jarring quasi-narrative collage. With Jack Skelley and Nic Greene, Dave Childs and Nancy Evans. Coproduced by High Performance Magazine and Jacki Apple for “Soundings” on KPFK Pacifica Radio.
(The Peristaltic Airwaves and portions of Plato’s Cave, Rothko’s Chapel, Lincoln’s Profile were previously released on High Performance Audio in cassette form in 1987.)

Mike Kelley / Michael Smith A Voyage of Growth and Discovery(DVD)

Mike Kelley and Michael Smith’s feature-length video A Voyage of Growth and Discovery follows the existential journey of Baby IKKI over several days at a festival of “radical self-expression,” famous for its presentations of large-scale displays of fire, held in the remote Black Rock Desert of Nevada. Baby IKKI, pre-lingual and of ambiguous age, is a character that artist Michael Smith has been performing for over thirty years. The Baby, alone in his journey, despite being surrounded by thousands of revelers, negotiates the rave-like festival environment while also exploring the primal natural elements of fire, water, earth, and wind. The hour-and-a-half long video mirrors the annual event: four days and nights of festival, preceded by an introductory travel section, and followed by a post-festival day. The festival itself is a carnivalesque event where IKKI is subsumed in raves, faced with erotic encounters, and surrounded by multitudes of costumed party-goers—many dressed in childish attire (though none as infantile as IKKI). The culmination of the event is the spectacular public “burn,” after which the Baby is left alone to ponder his “voyage.” 92 min. (2011)

Available now from ARTPIX.
